How to Acquire Patient Fingerprints in ViewPoint

Please understand that this feature of ViewPoint does not store actual fingerprints. Ten or more data points or markers are stored that enable patient identification. Except for the initial fingerprint acquisition process, the images of the fingerprints shown on the screen, cannot be viewed, printed, or reconstructed in any way.

To add fingerprint recognition for a patient:

Open the patient folder. A red VP Fingerprint icon on the ViewPoint toobar (shown below) indicates that there is no fingerprint on file for the patient OR that no patient record is active or open on the workstation. A green icon indicates that the patient has a fingerprint file.

1. Open the patient folder. A red VP Fingerprint icon on the ViewPoint toobar (shown below) indicates that there is no fingerprint on file for the patient OR that no patient record is active or open on the workstation. A green icon indicates that the patient has a fingerprint file.

2. If the icon is red, click the red VP Fingerprint icon on the ViewPoint Toolbar. If no fingerprint is on file for the patient, the Acquire Fingerprint dialogue will be initiated. If the patient already has a fingerprint file, you will be prompted to clear the fingerprint.

a. Click [Yes] to erase any fingerprint file. This is especially useful when you accidentally assign a fingerprint file to the wrong patient folder and simply need to delete the file.

b. Click [No] to continue. You can then verify and/or acquire new fingerprint information for the patient.

3. Following the instructions on the screen, have the patient place the right index finger of the right hand on the touch pad to acquire the first fingerprint sample.

A graphic of the fingerprint appears in the first section of the Acquire Fingerprint screen. Repeat this process three more times: The program will use all four samples to create an identification file. Note the Quality definition below each fingerprint sample. Samples that are not good quality must be redone. An example of the Acquire Fingerprint screen after four samples is shown below.

Here are some tips on recording a good image:

4. Click [Register] when 4 good samples have been acquired.

5. Click [Yes] to verify the fingerprint.

6. Instruct the patient to touch the sensor again: You will see a screen indicating that the fingerprint matched; the VP Fingerprint will then turn from red to green.

Before exiting, you will be given the opportunity to change/overwrite the stored fingerprint if needed. This allows you to re-enter the patient's fingerprint when necessary.

Once this process is accomplished, when your patients arrive, they only need to put their right index finger on the touch pad at the On-Deck Kiosk in order to check in. Anyone without registered fingerprint data attempting to login to On-Deck using the touch pad will see "No Fingerprint Found on File" as a message.
